Fair Trade

Curious about Fair Trade? It can get pretty technical, but in short, it's the way trade is supposed to be handled. Why? Because it's the just, fair if you will, method of trading; between people, countries and continents.

Fair Trade
the White House (FTWH) has a quick and user-friendly tutorial and timeline on what, exactly, is fair trade?!

As set forth by the World Fair Trade Organization and the Fairtrade Labeling Organization, Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers. Fair Trade Organizations (backed by consumers) are engaged actively in supporting producers, awareness raising and in campaigning for changes in the rules and practice of conventional international trade.

For further understanding, FTWH also recommends perusing (in ABC order) Fair For Life (IMO), Fair Trade Federation, Fair Trade Resource Network, and Trans Fair USA.

Canaan Fair Trade

A favorite of Fair Trade the White House is Canaan Fair Trade. Not only do they harvest and supply quality, organic edibles, they employ marginalized Palestinian laborers caught in conflict to earn sustainable wages. Based in Jenin, Palestine, Canaan Fair Trade sells olive oil and other delicacies produced by over 1,700 small farmers organized in informal cooperatives and represented by the Palestine Fair Trade Association (PFTA). They supply bulk as well as finished and packaged olive oil and other goods to Europe, North America and the Middle East.

From Olive Oil to Wild Thyme to Couscous to an assortment of Whole Olives, Canaan Fair Trade is the label to look for. Available in many retail outlets.
